Cameras For Home Video Surveillance Systems

by Jeffrey Parker

It used to be the case that video surveillance systems were only used by businesses large enough to afford them. As prices have come down, they have become increasingly popular among homeowners. A home video surveillance system such as CCTV (closed circuit TV) can provide security against threats such as burglars by monitoring vulnerable areas.

The viewing monitor is a key element of the home video surveillance system. The monitor will display video images from the cameras. The images are usually black and white and of a higher resolution than that of an analog television set - typically between 500 and 1000 lines.

The surveillance camera is another vital element. When a home surveillance system is set up, cameras are generally installed around the exterior of a home in the locations that are the most vulnerable. They must be placed where they can be hidden or at least very hard to see. These cameras run constantly, sending video to monitors on a regular basis. To work properly at night, you'll need either lighting or infrared security cameras that will monitor even in total darkness.

A requirement of a video surveillance system, other than a wireless system, is a coaxial cable. These cables transmit video signals from the camera to a monitor. You can get many different kinds and sizes and find one that's right for your equipment at most security suppliers and electronics stores. While your home security system will come with coaxial cables, the location and set-up of your system might mean you need more.

Switchers are also required for home video security systems. Switchers let you send more than one camera feed to a single monitor. Usually, a switcher will cycle through the feeds until there is any movement detected at a specific motion sensor security camera. As soon as the switcher detects any motion, the camera is locked on to the target and it will automatically observe the movement.

Some home video surveillance systems use video recorders that record any sort of live video feed which you have programmed. This is handy if you travel a great deal, since the recorder will capture a break-in while it is occurring. If a case goes to court or to the law enforcement, you may use this video recording for evidence. Video recorders will catch the burglars in the very act - particularly if you place the camera where it's hard to see.

By combining a monitor and video surveillance cameras, home video surveillance systems can easily catch burglaries and break-in's. They are quite affordable these days, and are in use in thousands of homes throughout North America. If you're looking for the ideal way to protect your home - a home video surveillance system is certainly something you should check out.

When it was first introduced, video surveillance systems were used primarily by medium to large businesses. Currently however, they are becoming much more common in homes. The surveillance cameras are also an important component. When setting up the home video surveillance system, the cameras are installed strategically around the outside of the home, in the most vulnerable locations. They should be placed where they are hidden or difficult to see. To work properly at night, you'll need either lighting or infrared security cameras that will monitor even in total darkness.
